Police stated on Friday evening that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) obstructed police duty during the ongoing protest in Lootuvaifi, and action will be taken against those responsible.

Special Operations (SO) Police prevented protesters from leaving Artificial Beach and heading towards Majeedhee Magu. Clashes subsequently broke out between protesters and police, with officers using pepper spray. Six individuals have been arrested so far.

In a statement, police said the MDP rally commenced from Majeedhee Magu, deviating from the previously permitted route.

Police reported that protesters had been repeatedly warned not to proceed in this manner.

However, without responding, the protesters threw items at the police and obstructed them from carrying out their duties, the agency said. Therefore, legal action will be taken against those who have committed such acts.

The agency has advised all parties not to interfere with police duty.

Reportedly, a large number of people gathered, and many are being arrested during the protest. Police have not yet released the exact number of suspects. However, Sun journalists in the area observed three individuals being arrested.
