Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, have raided the Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in K. Himmafushi.
Police confirmed to media that a team from the Drug Enforcement Department is currently active at the rehab centre.
Speaking with Sun, National Drug Agency (NDA)’s chairperson Lubna Zahir said the operation was prompted by a tip received to Police intelligence and will comprise of a search to locate a specific item on the premises.
“This is a special operation carried out by the Police aimed at locating a specific item we are suspicious of. The whole rehabilitation centre will be searched as part of this operation,” she said.
Lubna noted that Police conduct routine raids of rehab centres in order to ensure that there are no prohibited items on the premises.
She added that the raids are also aimed at ensuring the safety of patients.
“The purpose of the operation is to ensure all NDA centres are “clean” and clear of all drugs and other illegal contraband under our zero-tolerance policy,” she added.
