President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu returned to the Maldives on Thursday, concluding his official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The visit was primarily for President Muizzu to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
President Muizzu arrived in China last Friday. During his visit, he engaged in bilateral meetings with several national leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss strengthening diplomatic ties.
He also participated in the SCO Summit, attending high-level meetings alongside other heads of state and official representatives. On the sidelines of the summit, the President held further bilateral discussions with various heads of state to explore avenues for enhancing foreign relations.
A significant outcome of the visit was the signing of 11 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at fostering cooperation between the Maldives and China across diverse sectors. These agreements encompass areas such as economic development, infrastructure enhancement, and renewable energy.
Additionally, President Muizzu attended a commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people's victory in World War II.
The President's Office affirmed that the visit was instrumental in further strengthening the relationship between the Maldives and China. This marks President Muizzu's second official visit to China.
