President announces plan to build high-end engineering research facility in Maldives

The government has decided to construct a dedicated building equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory facility for engineering students to conduct research and analysis.

The President made the announcement on Sunday in a special message on the occasion of National Engineers’ Day.

Congratulating the public on the occasion, the President said professionals working across engineering fields shoulder a significant and vital responsibility. He noted that the Maldives requires a large number of Maldivian youth in these sectors, and emphasised the importance of providing government support to increase the number of Maldivians pursuing higher education.

Following the address, the President’s Office also shared details of his meeting with students from MNU’s Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology. During the interaction, students highlighted the challenges they face in pursuing engineering studies, and the President reaffirmed the crucial role of Maldivian engineers in national development and his commitment to expanding opportunities in the sector.

The President said the new building will house research and development in advanced fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronic and software engineering, as well as aircraft and aeronautical engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital engineering, with facilities for experimentation.

“The government will continue to invest in this. This will be done in a sustainable manner without burdening the government budget. Hopefully this will increase the number of students who want to study in various engineering fields and take Maldives to a very high level,” he said.

He added that the purpose of the building is to provide opportunities for Maldivian students as well as foreign students to conduct research in the Maldives. The technical work and investment for the project will be undertaken sustainably without burdening the state budget, he reiterated.

President Dr Muizzu said the project will encourage children who aspire to study engineering and help elevate the Maldives to a higher level in these fields.

In concluding his message, the President extended his best wishes and thanks to all engineers, students in the field and everyone contributing to nation-building.
