Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has invited members interested in contesting the upcoming local council elections on the party’s ticket to express their interest.
The local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections are scheduled for next year.
MDP, via a statement on Thursday, said party members interested in contesting the local council and WDC elections on the party’s ticket can submit their expression of interest by 14:00pm on Tuesday, September 30th.
The party said only members who have expressed their interest can compete in the party’s primary. A date for the primary will be announced at a later date, the party added.
To qualify for MDP’s ticket, an individual must meet the following requirements:
MDP has instructed interested members to submit required form alongside the criminal and debt clearance record from the Department of Judicial Administration.
MDP, which has a total of 43,675 members at present, is currently Maldives’ largest opposition party. After its defeat in the previous presidential and parliamentary elections, MDP has been actively preparing for a strong performance in the upcoming local council elections.
