Bank of Maldives (BML)’s CEO Mohamed Shareef states the bank has opened self-service banking ATMs across 47 islands so far this year.

A self-service banking ATM established at B. Maalhos was inaugurated on Thursday. With this, ATMs have been established across all residential islands in Baa Atoll.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Shareef described the day as a historic moment for Baa Atoll, as ATM service has been introduced to the last 10 islands in the atoll that previously lacked the service.

“With this, ATM service has been established at all residential islands in seven atolls. They are: Dhaalu, Haa Alifu, Noonu, Shaviyani, Kaafu and Baa atolls,” he said.

Shareef added that the bank is prepared to commence ATM service at 23 islands in five atolls, with plans to successfully conclude the project within the upcoming two to three months by introducing ATM service in the remaining 33 islands across seven atolls.

“ATM service is one of the most effective methods for delivering essential banking services to all islands in the Maldives,” Shareef said, while highlighting the significant demand for ATMs which is evident through number of ATM transactions conducted and queues lined up at ATM centres.

Shareef highlighted several advantages the bank has gained from ATM services. In this regard:

  • A reduction in the number of customers visiting bank branches for services.
  • An increase in the flow of funds into the bank through ATM transactions.

According to Shareef, the bank aims to ensure that all Maldivian citizens have access to its services, without excluding anyone. He added that people today no longer believe ATMs should be limited to just certain islands.
