President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Saturday that his administration will never allow a foreign power to gain control over the Maldives, adding that this is the reason why he prioritizes the development of the military and police forces.

He made the remarks in a meeting held with senior military and police officials in the morning, on occasion of Maldives’ 60th Independence Day.

Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu said he is often question regarding why his administration prioritizes the military and the police.

He said that the Maldives must always be in a state of readiness to protect its people, and must manage its affairs themselves.

Highlighting on Maldives vast maritime territory, President Muizzu said that the reason for the huge investments in the development of the capacity of the military and the police is so that the Maldives is equipped to manage its affairs themselves.

But he said that the Maldives is open to technical and other forms of assistance from its bilateral partners to manage its affairs.

“This administration’s policy is to work together with other countries to boost capacity in all other ways. But having others come here and take control of managing our affairs goes against our policy. This is the reason why this administration prioritizes the military and the police,” he said.

President Muizzu said his administration will continue to focus on increasing the role of and boosting the capacity of the military and the police in the coming days.

He also paid tribute to national heroes for their sacrifices for the sake of Maldives’ independence, and stressed that it is the responsibility of all Maldivian citizens to ensure that the country’s freedom is upheld for future generations.

He said that he is willing to do everything necessary to aid the military and the police with pride.

The ceremony saw military and police officials renew their oath to protect and serve the country.
