Govt to submit bill to block formulation of any laws that contradict Islam, says President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says that his administration plans to submit new legislative changes to Parliament, seeking to create a strong system that prevents the formulation of any laws that contradict with the religion of Islam.

Addressing the National Day function in HA. Utheemu on Saturday, President Muizzu said that while the Constitution prohibits the enactment of any laws that contradict Islam, the country lacks a strong and efficient system to ascertain this.

President Muizzu said that he plans to bring an end to this, and introduce a system to ascertain that the country’s laws do not contradict with Islam in any way.

“Today, I assure the Maldivian people that we will, god willing, submit this during the third session of the Parliament this year,” he said.

President Muizzu said that the country has risked or lost its independence every time it has implemented any un-Islamic policies. He said that it has been the decision of one person to reject his religion that the Maldives lost its independence to the Portuguese for 15 brutal years.

“Every time un-Islamic policies or policies unfamiliar to Islam have been implemented, it has cost the Maldives its freedom or put the country’s independence at risk,” he said.

President Muizzu said that he therefore believes it necessary to have a strong national system that protects the country’s Islamic faith.

He also stressed the need to follow laws and regulations, and urged the Maldivian people to endeavor to build a civilized society based on mutual respect.
