The police said on Sunday that the ringleader in the case involving the misappropriation of food allowance disbursed to officers stationed in Sh. Milandhoo has been suspended.

The case, involving large sums of money being deposited to the private bank accounts of policers, came to media attention on July 8.

The police said at the time that the officers involved had been brought to Male’, and that an internal investigation had been launched by the Police Professional Standards Command. However, the police did not say how many officers are believed to be involved or disclose any other details regarding the case.

Sun has been informed that the money found in their private bank accounts were intended as payment for catering services to the Milandhoo Police Station. The officers allegedly colluded with the caterer to skim the funds.

When asked for an update, a police spokesperson told Sun that the case remains under investigation by the Professional Standards Command.

The ringleader behind this has been suspended from duty, added the spokesperson.

The police did not say who the ringleader was.

Necessary action will be taken against individuals involved once the investigation is done, said the spokesperson.

The exact amount of money involved remains unclear.

Food allowances aren’t usually given directly to police officers. Instead, meals at police facilities are usually provided by a catering service through a bidding process. However, some smaller police stations are reported to give food allowances directly to officers.
