Maldives Neuro Endocrine Medical Facility has opened Centre for Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders, the first of its kind in the Maldives.

The Centre was inaugurated by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim on Sunday evening.

Located in Henveiru Lily Magu, the Centre was established with assistance from the Belarus Maldives Cultural Center.

It features a specialized laboratory and diagnostic equipment to cater to common metabolic disorders in the Maldives such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and dyslipidemia. People of all ages will be treated at the Centre.

On Sunday evening’s inauguration ceremony, the systemic use of Continuous Glucose Monitors Systems (CGMS) was introduced to Maldives for the first time.

These latest systems are used to monitor blood sugar levels in real time, assisting doctors in providing correct medicines and doses in treatments.

Speaking on CGMS, Senior Consultant at the Centre, Dr. Mohamed Wisham, explained that the system simplifies the treatment of patients with severe forms of diabetes. He also elaborated on how the technology functions.

“We aim to attach the sensors to parts of the body that do not contain major blood vessels. Blood and glucose levels will be continuously monitored for 24 hours a day over a period of 15 days. This monitoring will reveal fluctuations related to food intake. Based on the results, we will make any necessary adjustments to the patient's medication,” he detailed.

Dr. Wisham reaffirmed his commitment to creating an environment at the Centre that is well-suited for the treatment of metabolic disorders. He added that a dedicated registry for patients will be established at the Centre.

He expressed hope to see such centres established in government hospitals in the future.

During Sunday evening’s ceremony, Health Minister Nazim also launched a book authored by experienced Endocrinologists Dr. Mohamed Wisham & Dr. Mariya Rusalenko. ‘Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders Patient Education Guide’, is the second book on patient education written to self-educate the population on common metabolic disorders in Maldives.

After inaugurating the Centre, Minister Nazim toured the facility and observed the services that had been set up.
