Maldives and Malta have held discussions on boosting new trade prospects and increasing foreign investment, reinforcing their commitment to cultivating a stronger and more inclusive economic relationship.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel and Maltese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Dr. Ian Borg on Tuesday as part of Minister Khaleel’s ongoing official visit to Malta.
The meeting was held at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta.
During the meeting, both ministers acknowledged that Maldives and Malta shared striking similarities and shared values despite being separated by geographical distance.

The ministers described Minister Khaleel’s ongoing visit to Malta as a pivotal step towards building a reinvigorated Maldives-Malta bilateral relations. They emphasized the importance of fostering closer ties through expanded collaboration, exchange of expertise and working together on shared priorities.
Both ministers, as fellow small island nations, also reaffirmed a mutual dedication to environmental stewardship, notably in the transition into renewable energy.
They resolved to work towards boosting new trade prospects and increasing foreign investment, reinforcing their commitment to cultivating a stronger and more inclusive economic relationship.
Both sides also welcomed stronger people-to-people ties, particularly through increased collaboration in the areas of tourism, fisheries and higher education.
