Maldives Customs has seized drugs worth over MVR 800,000 that were attempted to smuggled to Maldives on Saturday night.

Customs said the drugs were seized during a further search of a general goods shipment that arrived in the Maldives from Thailand due to suspicions that the shipment contained drugs.

Customs detailed that the drugs were concealed in 20 packets and tested positive for cannabis during the first phase of testing.

They weighed 1097 grams with the packaging, Customs added, while placing its street value at MVR 877,600.

The seized drugs have been handed over to Maldives Police Service for further investigation.

Just four days ago, Customs seized drugs worth MVR 6.7 million that were attempted to smuggled to the Maldives via sea.

While drugs remain the most prevalent social issue in the Maldives, the current administration is undertaking significant efforts to address the issue, including strengthening the rehabilitation system.
