A standard housing unit from the 4,000-unit towers: Only 1,820 applicants have been listed as eligible to receive these units under the Gedhoruveriya scheme according to current government's evaluation
The Deputy Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) has affirmed its potential successive government would prioritize awarding social housing first to the delisted but eligible applicants under the current administration’s recent evaluation.
The current administration had disqualified several previously eligible applicants entitled to the 4,000-unit social housing flats under ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme which was launched during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
Though the former government announced a finalized applicants list around the culmination of the then administration, any proceedings to award the flats were halted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) citing discrepancies.
After significant delays in any progress in the initiative, the current government evaluated 4,939 forms from the previous eligible applicants; with only 1,820 finalized as entitled to receive the flats.
MDP has since launched a designated portal for all 3,119 delisted applicants. The party has also launched a complaints hotline at 7571637, with communication available for the number via popular messaging apps including WhatsApp, Viber and Telegram.
At the press conference held to launch the portal, the MDP Deputy Chairperson said the final list released during the previous administration had followed careful evaluation. He affirmed MDP would continue to advocate on behalf of the disqualified applicants.
“We assure that the next MDP government to succeed will prioritize awarding social housing first to all the disqualified applicants from this list,” Ibrahim added.
MDP confirmed it would continue to provide assistance to the delisted applicants until the end of March. Disqualified applicants can lodge grievances in person to one of the party’s offices, located at Chaandhanee Magu between 21:15hrs and 23:15hrs effective from Sunday, March 9, 2025.
The 4,000-unit housing towers consist of 2,750 three-bedroom units and 1,250 two-bedroom units.
The Minister of Housing earlier said that the remaining flats would be awarded after evaluating the remaining forms.
The government has also launched a complaints portal effective from March 1st until the end of the current month. Meanwhile, the government has also noted that it received over 600 complaints in under three days since the portal’s launching.
