President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will construct houses on private land plots in islands designated for housing projects and in this trajectory, has appealed to individuals who wish to build houses on their own land plots this way to share their information with the respective local council.
The President made the announcement while speaking to Dh. Meedhoo residents on Monday night during a visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour of Dhaalu Atoll.
A total of 200 housing units are planned for Meedhoo.
According to the President, if residents of islands where housing projects have been announced desire, three-room houses will be built at their private land plots at the government’s expense, which will be deducted from the total number of housing units when implementing the project.
As such, he has requested councils of islands where housing projects have been planned to identify residents who wish to build houses on their private land plots and share the information with the Ministry before the end of Ramadan.
He described this as an ideal option for individuals facing difficulties in building houses at their private land plots.
The President has described this year’s budget as a revolutionary budget for housing.
He affirmed that the housing constraints faced in Meedhoo would be resolved before the end of his current presidential term.
During the meeting with Meedhoo residents last night, Uhdhoo, previously owned by a private individual, was designated as a leisure destination for Dhaalu Atoll residents. The agreement pertaining to the project was signed by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Mariyam Mariya and Minister Adam of Local Government, Cities and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar.
Other significant agreements crucial for the advancement of Meedhoo were also signed during the meeting. They include the agreement to develop a Waste Management Centre of Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) in Meedhoo which was signed by Minister of Tourism and Environment Dr. Thoriq Ibrahim and WAMCO’s Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel.
An agreement for the second phase of the Meedhoo harbor upgrade project was also signed by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)’s Managing Director Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retd.) Ahmed Saudee.
President Muizzu assured these projects will proceed at a fast pace while ensuring quality.
He affirmed that all pledges made to Meedhoo will be materialized within this year and next year.
