Kanduhulhudhoo man who raped two-year-old granddaughter dies in prison

The man from GA. Kanduhulhudhoo who was imprisoned for the rape of his two-year-old granddaughter – in a case that sent shockwaves throughout the nation - has also died in prison.

The rape was reported to authorities in January 2020 by the victim’s maternal family.

Criminal Court convicted two people in the case in 2022; Hassan Moosa Didi and Ibrahim Didi. They are the victim’s paternal great-grandfather and grandfather, respectively. They both received life sentences.

Hassan Moosa, the great-grandfather died in prison on September 9, 2023.

Maldives Correctional Service, on Friday, announced Ibrahim Didi, the grandfather, died in the early hours of the day.

In this regard, Corrections said Ibrahim Didi suddenly collapsed last night while awake. He was transported to Hulhumale’ Hospital in emergency after he showed no response when administered first aid. He was declared dead at approximately 2:40am as he showed no response following treatment.

According to Corrections, Ibrahim Didi had been receiving treatment for high blood pressure, cholesterol and tremors at the time of his death.

The rape of the two-year-old girl had rocked not just the island of Kudahuvadhoo, but also the entire Maldives.

According to the prosecution, Hassan Moosa Didi and Ibrahim Didi had subjected the victim to repeated sexual assault over a prolonged period of time.
