Female motorcyclist attacked by two men on her way from Gan to Fonadhoo

Police have launched an investigation after a female motorcyclist was followed and attacked by two men on the road on her way from Gan to Fonadhoo in L. Atoll.

A police spokesperson said on Saturday that the incident was reported to the police at around 06:34 pm on January 6.

According to the police, in addition to following her on their motorcycle, they also tried to forcibly snatch her mobile phone and snatched her helmet and threw it away into a forest area.

The police statement announcing the investigation after the woman took to Facebook on Friday to share her experience, along with videos and photos of her alleged assailants.

According to her, she decided to go public with her experience “since nothing has been done about it.”

The woman said that the two men started following her from near the Laamu Finiashi in the Mathimaradhoo district of Gan at around 06:15 pm on January 6, as she was headed back home to Fonadhoo from Gan.

She stopped at Mukurimagu to put on her helmet, and the two passed by on their motorcycle saying “Hey Afoo.”

She said that she ignored them and drove past them hoping they would leave.

As she reached Fonadhoo, she took off her helmet and looked to her left to see the two men there.

She said that they began to verbally harass her again. She initially ignored them until one of them began to film her with his phone.

She said that she too took out her phone and began filming them, at which point he got angry.

He stopped the motorcycle and attacked her, threatening to “smash the phone.”

 He tried unsuccessfully to grab her phone, and then snatched her helmet and threw it away before fleeing.

The woman said that she injured her left wrist in the incident.

She said that she immediately reported the incident to the police.

The woman said that the police told her that the two men claimed they followed her because she broke their license plate.

“As per police they said I broke their motorcycles plate board. As per them that was the reason they were following me. Video shows clearly that no plates were broken!!!!” she said.

The police said they were investigating the incident.
