The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has expressed concern over the emergence of a fraudulent website impersonating a legitimate entry system for travelers to the Maldives.
Abdulla Ghiyas, the president of MATATO, sent a letter to the Tourism Ministry, Maldives Immigration and Maldives Police Service urging action against the website on Wednesday.
According to MATATO, the website https://www.maldives-entrymale.com/ falsely claims to facilitate the Maldives Immigration Traveler Declaration online system and charges unsuspecting tourists for entry visas, which are otherwise free upon arrival in the Maldives.
MATATO said that several of its members have reported incidents where their clients fell victim to the scam, resulting in confusion and financial loss.

MATATO stressed that such fraudulent activities not only exploit tourists but also tarnish the reputation of the Maldives as world-renowned destination known for its transparency and hospitality.
The association has asked the Tourism Ministry to collaborate with the Maldives Immigration and Maldives Police Service for an immediate investigation into the operators behind the website.
It also asked for an awareness campaign in the form of public advisories to warn potential tourists and local stakeholders about the scam, and to work towards shutting down the fraudulent website and holding its operators accountable under the law.
MATATO has expressed deep concern over the potential long-term impact of such fraudulent schemes.
It also expressed readiness to assist relevant authorities in combating the issue and safeguarding the integrity of Maldives tourism.
