Man arrested for beating own mother in attempt to extort money

The police have arrested a man from Male’ City after he beat his own mother in an attempt to extort money from her.

The suspect, a 40-year-old Maldivian male’, was arrested on Tuesday.

He was presented before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Wednesday.

Police officers who attended to the scene told the court that the man beat his mother in an attempt to force her into giving him money.

Court documents also show that the man has a history of beating his mother, who has a protective order issued against him by the Family Court.

He had therefore also violated the protective order when he committed the crime.

The police stressed in court that the suspect is a repeat offender.

The Criminal Court remanded him custody of the police for seven days.

A similar incident took place in October, when a 28-year-old was arrested for beating and robbing his mother in her home in Hulhumale’. The case came less than a month after a 38-year-old man was arrested for beating his mother.
