Warehouse fire burns down over MVR 3 million worth of equipment

The loss from the fire that broke out in a warehouse located in the Maaveyo Magu of Male’ City earlier this week is estimated to rise above MVR 3 million, according to the warehouse owner.

The fire at the warehouse, located on the 10th floor of Niyandhurumaage, was reported to the authorities at around 06:30 pm on Monday. Firefighters took an hour to put out the blaze.

Ahmed Shiyam, one of the shareholders of the restaurant franchise behind Solite and OTP by Solite, told Sun that the warehouse was used by them as a setup for weddings and other such functions. It was also used to temporarily store expensive equipment.

“It had a lot of expensive equipment such as deep freezers used as kitchen setups for the restaurants. It also housed chairs and other equipment we procured for events,” he said.

The fire resulted in structural damages, and burned equipment worth an estimated MVR 3.86 million to MVR 4.63 million.

“We stored over USD 200,000 to USD 300,000 worth of equipment. I don’t think any of this equipment are in usable condition,” said Shiyam.

Shiyam said that forensic police had investigated the scene, but the cause of the fire remains unclear at this point.

“This place isn’t frequently used. And none of the equipment are connected to electricity,” he said.

Shiyam said he is waiting for the police to finish their investigation.
