Sri Lanka Business Council of Maldives launches, boosting Male’-Colombo trade link

The Sri Lanka Business Council of the Maldives officially launched on Tuesday, providing a platform that connects likeminded entrepreneurs and professionals from Male’ and Colombo, who share a vision for progress and innovation.

The council was inaugurated by Maldivian Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed on Tuesday evening, in an event attended by Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Maldives Ranga Goonawardena, and entrepreneurs from Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Bilateral trade between Maldives and Sri Lanka currently tops USD 160 million annually.

Addressing the gathering held at JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La, Saeed described Sri Lanka as a key partner in Maldives’ development journey, expressed hopes to see the more trade exchanges between the two countries.

In his address, Saeed highlighted on Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for economic resilience – which he said its reshaping Maldives’ business landscape.

“This strategic direction is opening doors for enterprises focused on environmental solutions and responsible commerce, contributing to building a more resilient economy where traditional strengths meet modern economic aspirations,” he said.

Saeed said that the establishment of the Sri Lanka Business Council of Maldives arrives at an opportune moment.

“… As we actively seek distinguished partners to contribute to and benefit from these strategic endeavors. Your comprehensive expertise, spanning diverse economic sectors perfectly compliment our development aspirations,” he said.

Saeed said that the Maldives’ new economic vision presents exceptional opportunities for enterprises, businesses, and highly qualified professionals.

“This council formalizes what has long been evident; our business communities are natural allies. Let us harness this platform to generate employment and enhance our bilateral ties,” he said.

In his address, Goonawardena said that the council can be made a driving force for trade, investment and shared prosperity.

“This council is not just a platform for networking. It is a bridge for opportunities. It will assist the Maldivian businesses exploring trade and investment in Sri Lanka. And similarly, it will guide Sri Lankan businesses aiming to expand into the Maldives,” he said

Goonawardena said that the council will also support the Maldivian government’s efforts to attract foreign investment by encouraging Sri Lankan investors to explore opportunities in the country.

“This launch marks the beginning of a transformative journey. One that holds immense potential for the business communities of both Sri Lanka and Maldives,” he said.

The Sri Lanka Business Council of the Maldives, which is affiliated with the Sri Lankan High Commission in Male’, seeks to create a dynamic business forum, promoting sustainable economic growth, facilitating robust trade exchanges, and nurturing cultural ties.
