Total pledges in 5 million tree campaign rises to 3.1 million

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has pledged to plant one million trees under the 5 million tree campaign launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier this year – bringing the total pledges to 3.1 million.

President Muizzu launched the program to plant five million trees in five years on June 5, in celebration of the World Environment Day.

The MPL kickstarted a tree planting program under the initiative on Saturday, at the project site for the commercial port project in K. Thilafushi. The ceremony was attended by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and MPL’s CEO Mohamed Wajeeh.

At the ceremony, Wajeeh signed a pledge on behalf of the MPL to plant one million trees and presented it to Thoriq.

In a post on X on Saturday evening, Thoriq said it was great to see MPL join the initiative.

“@Portmv has pledged to plant one million trees under the Project, which brings the total pledges to 3.1 million now,” he said.

Thoriq said that more than 400,000 trees have been planted under the program.

“I look forward to working with everyone to achieve (even exceed) the target in the next few years,” he added.

According to the President’s Office, the 5 million trees initiative “reflects the government's commitment to safeguarding the country's fragile ecological systems and mitigating the impact of climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.”

The project seeks to plant trees that are endangered in the Maldives. As such, the project will see the planting of 90 species of trees.
