Complaints window on new EC nominee open

The Elections Commission (EC) of the Maldives has formally opened the complaints window to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's new member nominee, Abdul Haseeb Ismail.

President Muizzu nominated Haseeb as the new EC member since the term of the commission's president Fuad Thaufeeq will conclude on November 24th.

The parliament secretariat on Tuesday released a statement, confirming that after assessing Haseeb's nomination during Monday's sitting, the matter has been forwarded to the Independent Institutions' Committee for further review.

Any complaints regarding Haseeb need to be lodged before 12:00hrs on October 24, 2024 at the mail address of the committee or in written addressed to the parliament secretariat.

The secretariat further said complainants are required to include their full name, permanent address and contact number in their complaint letters.

The new nominee had was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs earlier in 2019, after which he was removed from the post.

Currently he is the Assistant Director of the Elections Commission.

The commission announced nomination window earlier on September 12th.

As per Elections Commissions Act, each member will serve a term no more than five years.
