Charges sought against man for barging into school, threatening teachers

The police have requested the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for criminal charges against a man who barged into a school in Male’ and threatened teachers.

The incident took place on August 6.

The 41-year-old man arrested in the case is accused of barging into a school classroom and threatening teachers there.

Court documents show the incident was witnessed by the school’s students.

The suspect was presented before the Criminal Court for an extension to his remand on Monday. The court ordered for him to be held in a custodial jail for 15 more days.

At Monday’s hearing, the police told the court that they would forward the case to the PGO for criminal charges later that day.

Judge Aishath Nuzuha decided it would be best to make a decision regarding holding the suspect in jail pending the outcome of his trial once formal charges are filed with the court.

Multiple members of the school’s staff told investigators they saw the suspect threatening the teachers, but said it did not escalate to physical violence.

In making her decision, the judge noted that the suspect has a history of criminal intimidation, and that he had threatened the teachers in plain sight of school students, with complete disregard for the fear it would invoke.
