President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday, has dismissed all the members, except one, from the Tax Appeal Tribunal.

Their dismissal was earlier on August 19th, approved by the parliament.

Parliament decided to counsel the president on their removal owing to huge discrepancies in the tribunal's works, which it discovered after a complaint review.

President's Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed spoke to 'Sun' Online, confirming the dismissal of four Tribunal members. They are:

  • Tax Appeal Tribunal's President: Mohamed Munawar Ali
  • Deputy President: Hussain Zaidhan Jaleel
  • Member: Khadheeja Naeem
  • Member: Ahmed Ashraf

All of these members were appointed during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

Ali Sajid is the only member to retain their Tribunal role.

The parliament's judiciary committee chose to retain Sajid in the position since he had brought the tribunal's misconduct to the parliament's attention, which the committee concluded, he did with the right intention.

The dismissed members are alleged of abusing their powers and illicit enrichment.

The parliament committee also discovered the tribunal is run at a venue beyond its operational requirements, which was a consistent financial burden for the state.
