New Male' City Council members swears in

The newly elected councilors to Male' City Council took their oaths on Wednesday.

The Male' City Council by-election was held on July 20th to elect members to three vacant seats. All three candidates from ruling People's National Congress (PNC) who contended against opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) counterparts secured the seats. They are:

  • Central-Machchangolhi Councilor: Fathimath Ishan
  • Hulhumale' Councilor: Ali Aiman
  • West-Henveiru Councilor: Fathimath Shaufa Saleem

The seats became vacant after its former councilors got elected to the 20th parliament.

Speaking at the ceremony, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim said the greatest relief for elected members is the public's trust in them.

"And because of this, we need to strive to maintain this trust with sincerity. We must work with full integrity and transparency. Those appointed to positions by superiors may not experience this feeling at the same extent," Azim said.

Azim requested the support of the newly elected members in realizing the council authority's policies and action plan. He said that since his election, he had served in his mayoral capacity without any political bias, towards the betterment of the public.

"It is my sincere request from all of you, to extend your support and assistance in our cause to solve the issues Male' City citizens face," the mayor added.

With the new councilors, the ruling PNC's members at the council body will rise to eight.
