The Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has said the initiative to install solar panels in mosques is currently at the survey stage.

He confirmed this while speaking on SSTV's "Baaru Hathareh" program.

Thoriq said the ministry held discussions with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs about the installation of solar panels in the adequate ones out of over 600 mosques across the Maldives.

Although the former government made announcements of installing solar panels in mosques, it never conducted appropriate researches for the cause, added Thoriq.

Funadhoo MP, Mohamed Mamdhooh, also a member of the Environment and Climate Change Committee of the Parliament said the committee had convened a meeting to discuss on installing solar panels in mosques.

"Discussions are already underway with the ministry to launch efforts to reduce conventional electricity output. The committee will convene this week for discussions on the same matter as well," Mamdhooh said.

He further highlighted that nine out of the 213 bills planned for the 20th parliament assembly focus on environmental issues.

Mamdhooh also assured that all the environmental pledges in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's manifesto will be accomplished in the next four years and four months.

President Dr. Muizzu has also announced his administration's decision to facilitate a domestic electricity tariff for mosques.
