Environment Ministry states efforts are underway to establish nature parks on ten islands across the Maldives.
State media, Public Service Media (PSM), citing the Ministry, said a substantial number of islands responded to an announcement for expression of interest in developing nature parks.
Following evaluations, work has commenced on the 10 islands that achieved the highest assessment scores
The islands selected for the development of nature parks are as follows:
HA. Molhadhoo
HDh. Kumundhoo
N. Landhoo
K. Huraa
ADh. Omadhoo
M. Kolhufushi
Th. Kinbidhoo
L. Gan
GA. Kondey
GDh. Fiyoaree
As further reported by PSM, the Ministry has already finalized the conceptual frameworks and project scopes for these sites in consultation with the respective island councils. It is currently in the process of formalizing grant agreements with these councils.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to establish at least one nature park in every atoll. The call for proposals under this initiative was opened in 2024.
At present, nature parks are already operational in the Maldives’ two major southern cities, Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.
