Drastic decline in fish products at MIFCO outlets

Fish products at MIFCO and other retail stores are facing a drastic decline in stock as Maldives experiences a low-fishing period.

Many members of the general public have expressed concern over the lack of availability of fish products.

In a statement on Tuesday, MIFCO said fish products in their outlets are either scarce or have completely been exhausted in light of a low-fishing period leading to a decrease in the amount of fish supplied to the company.

The state fisheries company recently revised its fish purchasing rate to reflect the prices at the international market – ultimately leading to a decrease in the rate at which MIFCO purchases fish. In this regard, unfrozen fish is presently purchased at a rate of MVR 14 per kilogram while frozen fish is purchased at a rate of MVR 16 per kilogram.

The drastic decline in fish products comes after recent strikes from local fishermen over the delays in disbursement of payment for fish purchased from them.
