Motorbike, car & energy drinks for personal use no longer eligible for duty exemption

Maldives Customs has announced a new range of imported goods that will no longer be eligible for duty exemption effective of Monday.

Customs said the regulation on duty exemption for goods brought by travelers, personal effects and commercial samples will come into effect on Monday, July 1st.

In this regard, goods valued at MVR 10,000 will be eligible for duty exemption under FOB value. Henceforth, goods exceeding the value of MVR 10,000 must be submitted for declaration. Duty exemption shall not be goods below MVR 10,000 if they are considered by the Customs as commercial, based on their nature, quantity, value, and import proportion.

The regulation set down goods imported for personal use that are ineligible for duty exemption regardless of their value. They are:

  • Motorcycle and autocycle
  • Four-wheeled vehicles
  • Marine vessels
  • Spare parts of vehicles and marine vessels
  • Energy drinks
  • Single-use plastic

Cigarettes and products containing nicotine and smoking devices will also be ineligible for duty exemption under this regulation starting from August.
