Suspect remanded pending trial’s end dies

Mohamed Jameel, 45, Zamaanee Villa, Sh. Funadhoo who is an inmate at Maafushi Prison passed away on Friday.

Maldives Correctional Service said Jameel was initially taken to Maafushi Prison’s Medical Centre after he was found unresponsive inside his cell and administered CPR. Following no changes to his condition, he was taken to Maafushi Health Centre at approximately 12:13pm.

Corrections said doctors declared him dead at 12:24pm after he went into cardiac arrest.

Jameel is a suspect who has been jailed pending the outcome of his trial on suspicions of violence using dangerous and sharp-edged weapons. Corrections said he had been undergoing treatment for a mental illness.

His death was immediately notified to his family. Maldives Police Service and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, added Corrections.
