Gov launches ‘cool school’ project to install ACs in all public schools

The government on Sunday launched the ‘cool school’ project, an initiative aimed at installing air conditioning systems in public schools across the country.

The project was launched during assembly at the public school in K. Maafushi on Sunday morning.

The event was attended by Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shafeeu said the administration will not hesitate to spend on education.

He said that nation building is a top priority for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and that education is a crucial part of that endeavor.

“A cool school will soothe hearts. It will bring happiness. This coolness will bring positive changes to the discipline of students and the entire school.

“This is the very essence of this project.”

Shafeeu acknowledged the installation of ACs will result in an increase in energy consumption at schools.

The government expects a 38 percent increase in spending on electricity bills.

But under the second phase of the project, the government will install solar panels at schools.

According to Shafeeu, the government plans to convert 30 percent of energy consumption at schools to solar power, thereby reducing spending on electricity.

He added that the installation of ACs in schools will also create jobs in local communities.

The ‘cool school’ project seeks to install ACs in all public schools within the next two years.
