Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, on Thursday night, said efforts are underway to increase the number of instructional hours allocated to Dhivehi, Islamic, and Mathematics in schools.

Speaking as the chief guest at Aminiyya School’s prize-giving ceremony for the 2023 and 2024 academic years, Minister Shafeeu disclosed that the national school curriculum is currently undergoing a comprehensive review and revision. He noted that schools continue to follow the curriculum introduced in 2015, which has remained largely unchanged since its implementation.

The Minister said the revisions are aimed at ensuring the curriculum reflects contemporary developments and are being guided by student performance data collected between 2015 and last year.

"The Education Ministry is working to allocate more instructional hours for students to study Dhivehi, Islamic, and Mathematics. We are also looking into increasing instruction hours dedicated to language learning for our students," the Minister stated.

The Minister expressed hope that the proposed changes would be introduced for Key Stage 1 students, comprising Grades 1, 2, and 3, by next year.

The move to increase teaching hours for these core subjects comes amid growing concerns among education experts over declining Mathematics pass rates nationwide.
