Concrete works up to West Park complete under project to curb flooding in Male'

Defense Ministry states concrete works up to West Park’s corner have been completed under the large-scale project initiated to temporarily fix Male' City's flood issues.

The project launched with the initiation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is being undertaken by the Defense Ministry and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure and Road Development Corporation (RDC).

Sharing an update on the project via X on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry announced that concrete works up to West Park’s corner alongside works related to shuttering and culvert frame have been completed.

They further said works on the final segment will commence upon receiving the permit to close the road, adding efforts in this trajectory are underway in collaboration with the relevant authorities.

Defense Ministry also noted that additional areas ideal for building dewatering sites have been identified. A technical meeting is slated for tomorrow, to finalize the drawings that have been completed with respect to these sites. 

The government has previously said that the project was initiated as the capital city's flood issue requires a temporary solution before the authorities can begin efforts to seek a permanent solution.

Even small amounts of rain result in flooding in Male’ City. If severe enough, they often impact homes, prompting the need to relocate residents from their respective homes to temporary shelters.

The issue of flooding in the city is one the biggest issues in Male' that has remained unresolved to date despite various efforts.
