Newly registered People’s National Front (PNF) has held its first senate meeting which was chaired by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
The historical first senate meeting was held at PNF’s office on Saturday night.
Members were elected to four committees formed under the party’s Articles of Association at last night’s meeting. They include Disciplinary, Appeals, EC and Member Affairs committees.
Elections Commission officially registered PNF on Thursday, April 25th – after the party held its inaugural congress on April 10th which faced unexpected hindrances owing to police intervention leading to a confrontation between the party members and officers.
The congress was held at a different location from the venue originally set, with the participation of 420 members.
Less than a week after President Muizzu took office in November, Yameen, who had been on house arrest, left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) – People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition – and initiated efforts to form PNF.
Since the recent High Court decision to overturn his money laundering and bribery conviction sentencing him to 11 years in prison, Yameen is no longer barred from participating in political activities.
