President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced his decision against making any further appointments to senior political posts.

He made the announcement while delivering his first presidential address at the opening sitting of the last session of the ongoing 19th parliament on Monday morning.

In his address, President Muizzu spoke on various topics of importance, one of such topics being the state of the Maldivian economy.

On this note, he emphasized the fact that steps to reduce the expenditure of the state have been rendered absolutely necessary in light of the current economic state.

Henceforth, he announced his decision to refrain from making any additional appointments to senior political posts in the government, with the exception of circumstances deemed necessary.

“In this regard, I announce my decision against making any additional appointments to senior political posts except for necessary circumstances in order to reduce state expenditure,” he had said.

It is an electoral pledge of President Muizzu to cap the number of political appointed in his administration at 700.

However, following the assumption of office on November 17, a total of 91 state ministers and 163 deputy ministers have been appointed so far.  There is also an individual appointed to the government on the level of a senior minister while there are 20 persons appointed to the government on ministerial level apart from the 22 cabinet ministers.
