President arrives in Beijing for high-level discussions on strengthening relations with China

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has traveled to China’s capital Beijing on Tuesday.

The first couple arrived in China’s Fujian province on Monday, on the Maldivian leader’s first state visit since assuming office in November.

They are making the visit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The first couple, accompanied by a high-level delegation, arrived in Beijing on Tuesday. Upon their arrival, they inspected a Guard of Honor accorded to them.

The official welcoming ceremony is slated for tomorrow.

Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, who is a member of the accompanying delegation, in a post on X, said President Muizzu will participate in high-level meetings and discussions over the course of the next three days. He added that the discussions will be centered on exploring avenues for further collaboration between Maldives and China and conveying the current administration’s priorities.

Before arrival at Beijing, President Muizzu, on Tuesday, participated in the Invest Maldives Forum at the Fuzhou Strait International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Fuzhou, China.

In his address at the forum, President Muizzu appealed for increased efforts to have China reclaim its spot as the top source market for tourist arrivals to the Maldives and assistance of Chinese investors for the 20-year masterplan to develop Velana International Airport.
