Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is scheduled to have a national council meeting at AA. Ukulhas tonight.
Leadership members of the party, including Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam, have traveled to Ukulhas to attend tonight’s meeting.
MDP’s Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) said the discussions on how the party will move forward is on agenda for the meeting.
Former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will not be attending the meeting.
Following the expiration of his presidential term last Friday, he will no longer hold the position of the party’s supreme leader; a title bestowed to him following his election as the parliament as per the party’s constitution.
As the party holds a national council meeting, the two top posts in the party remain vacant at the moment.
Former leader of the party and former president Mohamed Nasheed and former deputy leader of the party Mohamed Shifaz left the party during the mass exodus of members who supported Nasheed earlier this year. Their posts subsequently have remained vacant.
MDP last held a national council meeting on October 3rd, after their loss in the presidential election. The meeting saw discussions regarding the resolution filed by Nasheed’s new party, The Democrats, to change the governing system to a parliamentary system. The council, on that day, decided to support the current system of governance; a presidential system.
