Fire breaks out on yacht; passengers rescued

A huge fire broke out on a yacht off the Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, in North Male’ Atoll, on Saturday.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said the fire on the yacht – Majesty 62 – was reported to the authorities at 07:37 am.

Firefighters from the Male’ Fire Station were deployed to the scene on a Coast Guard Second Squadron harbor craft.

MNDF said the firefighters managed to control the fire at 09:48 am, and completely put it out at 10:14 am.

The tourists and crew on the yacht were rescued and taken to the Fari Islands on one of the resort’s speedboats.

MNDF said the fire did not result in any injuries.

However, a large part of the yacht was damaged in the fire.

The cause of the fire is unclear at this point.
