Muizzu wants to see women in one-third of Parliament seats

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says he wants to see women elected to at least one-third of the seats in the upcoming 20th parliamentary assembly.

In an interview to SanguTV on Thursday, Muizzu said the people want to move forward with the PPM-PNC.

He said he is committed to realizing the people’s aspirations.

Muizzu said that it is important for PPM-PNC to secure a supermajority at the Parliament to get it done.

“The Parliament will play a critical role in getting this done. I believe we need a lot of people from the PPM-PNC in the Parliament to get this done. I will enable us to roll out initiatives at high speed,” he said.

Muizzu said his goal is to secure a supermajority at the Parliament.

“We want two-thirds of the seats, ideally. We want 60 out of 93 MPs. Our goal is to secure a supermajority with our allies. I believe they will work with us in the coming days,” he said.

“I hope to see MPs that the people want, this time.”

Muizzu said he also wants to see more women get elected to the Parliament – at least one-thirds.

“It’s not written in the law. But I encourage it. I will work to see that more women contest the primaries. And to have them elected,” he said.

“We need to encourage them. There are women who want to, but don’t contest. I encourage them to.”

Out of the 87 MPs in the current parliamentary assembly, only four are women; Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam, Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood, and Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain.

With six additional seats, the next parliamentary assembly will have 93 seats.
