President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence in winning a second term in office, if he governs in accordance to the will of the people.
In a program on SanguTV on Thursday, Muizzu said that peace does not need to be established just between two countries, but that domestic stability and promotion of national interests must also take priority.
“I believe that if one serves the people closely, in accordance to their will, from day one itself, then they will give a second term too,” he said.
Muizzu said that that is the kind of leader he wishes to be.
He said that his administration’s projects will be shaped in accordance with the aspirations of the people.
If the administration changes trajectory midterm and sidelines the people, they aren’t going to agree to a second term.
He said that that was what happened to the outgoing administration.
“When we visited islands during the recent election, we saw the government heading a different direction, while the people remained on the same spot,” he said.
Muizzu said that projects in many of the islands were stalled, and that the projects that were being run weren’t being conducted as the people want.
“If the government is run in that manner, you aren’t going to get a second term,” he said.
Muizzu said he will govern the country as closely to the people as possible, and will protect the best interests of the country.
If I govern in this manner, the people aren’t going to refuse a second term, he said.
Muizzu’s comments come after the chairperson of Muizzu’s PNC and the director general of transition, Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) stated earlier Thursday that their goal was two consecutive terms.
Muizzu won the presidential runoff election with 54 percent of votes. He will take office on November 17.
