President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has remarked he will receive the support of a huge number of members from Jumhoory Party (JP) and The Democrats for the runoff.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of door-to-door campaign activities in Male’ City – President Solih announced receiving endorsements from many council members of JP; a party that has decided against supporting either candidate.
“Many JP council members are in discussion with us to join us,” he said.
“An almost majority of JP is now set to work with us MDP,” he added.
Had the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) received support from all parties – the runoff would have been much easier, said the president. Nevertheless, he noted receiving endorsements from a large number of general members of parties.
“A significant number of Democrats are also ready to work with us. I am saying we are receiving support from generally most at present,” he said.
Addressing the issue of the constitutional referendum to change the system of governance from the existing presidential system to the parliamentary system – said it had been something advocated by Democrats members even when they were in MDP.
Noting he had been in support of holding a constitutional referendum after the presidential election even back then, said the parliamentary resolution was backed in this trajectory.
