Opposition calls to nullify runoff re-registrations and a redo of the process

Opposition PPM-PNC coalition has called for the nullification of re-registrations received for the runoff round of the presidential election, demanding a re-do of the process.

The coalition has raised questions regarding the validity of over 25,000 re-registration applications the Elections Commission (EC) received for the runoff. They have also raised concerns over the sudden change in ballot boxes for some voters, without their knowledge.

Speaking at a press conference at HDh. Neykuradhoo on the sidelines of a campaign visit – PNC’s leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) alleged some voters were being re-registered to locations which are not their desired location for voting.

“The re-registration to the wrong location is not just our concern, but also the Elections Commission’s. This is especially concerning for Elections Commission’s chairman Fuad Thaufeeq. Fuad instructed us to do whatever we can, citing they (EC) were doing whatever they can,” he said.

Adhurey also advised supporters to take the slips issued to voters upon re-registration when they go to cast their votes, and encouraged them to protest if the voter is registered to a location that is not on the slip.

He reiterated the opposition’s repeated allegations of main ruling MDP utilizing state resources for its campaign.

Adhurey emphasized that the people, for the next five years, need a leader who is honest and sincere – and will bring independence and peace to the nation. He said this was evident from the outcome of the first round, adding the opposition coalition will give no chance to “steal” the election in the second round either.

At the press conference, Adhurey also on EC to refrain from infringing the rights of the citizens in addition to refraining from bowing down to influence from any figure in fulfilling their legally mandated responsibilities.

Two candidates will face off in the runoff of the presidential election slated for September 30^th; opposition PPM-PNC’s candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu who led the polls in the first round and main ruling MDP’s Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the incumbent president who came in second.
