Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) states that practical works on joining Sh. Komandoo with neighboring Mathikomandoo will begin in August.

In a tour of the project site on Friday, MTCC’s CEO Adam Azim said that reclamation of Mathikomandoo will be complete by the end of August, despite the skepticism from some.

“Many had said it would be impossible to reclaim Mathikomandoo. I assure you Mathikomandoo will be reclaimed by the end of August,” he said.

Azim said that work on joining Komandoo and Mathikomandoo will also begin in August, and will be complete in around six months.

Komandoo Council’s president Mohamed Sinan said he hopes to see the project completed and the people begin to enjoy the benefits as soon as possible.

“This is a big project. We accept that this project can’t be completed overnight. This is something we have talked about since we were kids,” he said.

Linking Komandoo and Mathikomandoo via a bridge had been one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral pledges in the run-up to the 2018 presidential elections.

MTCC was contracted to conduct the MVR 249 million project in January last year.

The scope of the project includes reclamation of 16.7 hectares of land in Mathikomandoo, construction of a 1,520-meter rock boulder revetment, a 353-meter groynes, and a 112-meter geobag revetment in the reclaimed area.

The project also involves protecting a 1,690-meter stretch of Komandoo, and construction of a connecting bridge between the two islands, measuring 200 meters.
