Long-time public servant Abdulla Jameel dies at 87

Abdulla Jameel, who served the state for over five decades, has died at the age of 87 years.

Abdulla Jameel, who served as the head of multiple government ministries during former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, died after a long illness in Male’ City on Sunday morning.

Abdulla Jameel was the eldest son of Al-Sheikh Mohamed Jameel Didi, a renowned politician and poet.

He provided over 50 years of public service to Maldives.

Some of the positions he filled include Health Minister, Fisheries Minister, Tourism Minister, Home Minister, Housing Minister, and Minister at the President’s Office.

He was also Maldives’ first Minister of State for Presidential Affairs.

Abdulla Jameel also served as President of the Youth Center, and as Head of the Maafannu Ward Office.

He also provided over 14 years of service as the representative for Th. Atoll at the Special Parliament, and over 30 years of service as the representative for the Th. Atoll at the Parliament.

He received the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin for his service on November 10, 2008.

He is survived by five children.
