A no-confidence motion was submitted against the Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday, with signatures of 54 MPs.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group had decided to submit the no-confidence motion against the party’s leader on Tuesday.

The MPs who signed the motion, in addition to MDP MPs, included three independent MPs and the leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Ahmed Siyam Mohamed.

The decision to submit the no-confidence motion was taken following allegations against Nasheed that he is stalling a no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, submitted by the opposition alliance over his alleged failure to act in the best interests of Maldives in the disputed maritime area between Maldives and Mauritius.

MDP enjoys a supermajority at the Parliament with 55 MPs, even without Nasheed. 43 votes are required to pass the motion against him.
