Foreigner serving prison sentence in Maldives dies

Ameenul Islam, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi national serving a prison sentence in Maafushi Prison has passed away on Friday.

Maldives Correctional Service reported that the inmate was found non-responsive when checked after failing to wake up for breakfast call. Subsequently, he was immediately transported to Maafushi Health Centre where he was declared dead.

Citing the Maafushi Health Centre, Corrections said his death was a result of a cardiac arrest.

Ameenul Islam is serving a seven-year prison sentence in connection to a sexual misconduct case. As per Corrections, he had not been receiving treatment for any illnesses at the time of his death.
