University admin staff to receive 35% pay bump

Administrative staff at universities will receive a 35 percent pay increment, announced the Maldivian government Monday.

The details of the new pay framework for higher education sector staff were announced by Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer in a press conference at the President’s Office.

Speaking at the press conference, Ameer said that the new pay framework will result in positive changes to the pay of admin staff at universities.

There are 376 administrative staff at the Maldives National University, 64 at the Islamic University of Maldives, and 18 at the Polytechnic.

Ameer said that once the migration to the new pay framework is complete, they too will receive the 35 percent allowance other staff receive.

National Pay Commission’s secretary-general Dr. Mohamed Faizal said the allowance wasn’t the permanent solution to the admin staff, and that there pay framework too, would undergo “positive changes in the future”.

“When we migrate to a national pay framework, this will include pay structures for employees of all professions. Right now, we are revising the pay framework for academic professions and senior positions. Even in state institutions that have yet to migrate to the new pay framework, they are paid 35 percent,” he said.

The new pay framework for higher education sector staff, which took effect on March 1, will result in pay increments to 767 staff.
