Veteran diplomat Jameela Ali assumes role as High Commissioner to the UK

Jameela Ali Khalid has been appointed as the High Commissioner of the Maldives to the United Kingdom.

The President appointed Jameela Ali Khalid and presented her letter of appointment at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office this morning.

The President sent her nomination to Parliament on the 16th of this month for the appointment of Jameela as the new High Commissioner of the Maldives to the UK.

The Foreign Relations Committee of Parliament examined her appointment under the Foreign Service Act before forwarding its recommendation to the full chamber.

The UK maintains a close and longstanding relationship with the Maldives, and the High Commissioner will play a key role in further strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The post of Maldivian High Commissioner to the UK became vacant following the appointment of Iruthisham Adam as Foreign Minister last April. Iruthisham served as the UK High Commissioner from December 2024 to April 14, 2026.

Jameela Ali Khalid, who was appointed as High Commissioner on Monday, is a veteran diplomat and long‑serving civil servant who has held several senior positions in the state.

Prior to her appointment, she served as Ambassador‑at‑Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also served as the Maldives’ first resident Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2019, where she led efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.

Beyond her diplomatic career, Jameela has served as Vice President of the Civil Service Commission, and previously worked in the education sector and state media, building a broad professional background across public service.
