Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC) has completed laying asphalt up to the State Electric Company (STELCO) headquarters.

MTCC had begun work on developing Ameenee Magu – one of the main roads of Male’ City – on Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning, the company had completed laying asphalt in the area between Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu and STELCO.

The project to develop Ameenee Magu was contracted by the Planning Ministry to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) – which later subcontracted the work to MTCC.

MTCC said the company planned on laying asphalt on three segments of the street in one night. The company got it done Tuesday night.

MTCC is set to lay asphalt on a 2,511 square kilometer area.

The delay in the laying of asphalt in the three segments of Ameenee Magu – one which houses a school and a public park, along with numerous offices - has been an issue of deep concern to the public.

The 1.7-kilometer Ameenee Magu is set to be redeveloped with asphalt, a modern storm drain system, and street lights.

The project had originally been contracted to Male’ City Council for MVR 39 million, but was later contracted to RDC for over double the cost – MVR 84 million.

The scope of the project:

  • Installation of braille blocks for visually impaired pedestrians
  • Wheelchair access
  • Installation of streetlights on both sides of the road
  • Installation of speed bumps
  • Installation of sign boards and bus stops
  • Installation of tree pots
  • Construction of cable trays on both sides of the road to install cables
  • Construction of special junctions for HV cables
