A Latvian traveler has been arrested for ingesting drugs which he attempted to smuggle into Maldives.

The traveler, identified as a 49-year-old Latvian male, was arrested by Maldivian police on Tuesday.

He was arrested in an operation run by the police with assistance from Immigration and Customs, based on information received by police intel.

Police said they were working on extracting the ingested drugs.

The latest case comes after a Swiss traveler was arrested with 2.2 kilos of cocaine and a Brazilian traveler with 2.6 kilos of cocaine last week. The Brazilian was deported while the Swiss suspect was remanded in custody of police for 15 days.

Customs reserves the right to bar entry to people based on intel they use or may use Maldives as a transit point to traffic drugs.
